A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap which is placed over a tooth to cover it & to restore its shape and size, strength, and improve its appearance. When the crown is cemented into place it fully covers the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line. It's used to protect a weak tooth from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth, to restore broken tooth or a severely worn down tooth, to cover and support a tooth with a large filling, to hold a dental bridge in place, to cover misshaped or severely discoloured teeth, to cover a dental implant & to make a cosmetic modification. Various options of crowns are Stainless steel/metal crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns, All-resin dental crowns, all-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns & Zirconia or milled crown.
Dental Caries
Dental caries, also known as tooth decay, cavities, or caries, is a breakdown of teeth due to activities of bacteria.Different types of bacteria are present in our mouths and build up a sticky film called dental plaque. When we eat and drink, these bacteria create acids, which can dissolve the protective layer beneath the retained plaque. The acid removes minerals from the enamel, which if left untreated can cause a cavity. Decay begins in the main portion of the tooth ,also called as enamel, and as the enamel is broken down the decay can go deeper into the dentin and may reach the nerve ,also called as pulp,if left untreated. Symptoms may include pain and difficulty while chewing. Brushing and inter-dental cleaning daily will help reduce the amount of dental plaque and bacteria in your mouth. Avoid sticky and sweet foods during the day to help reduce production of tooth-damaging acids in your mouth. Chewing gum can also help decrease bacterial growth. Once the enamel has been irreversibly damaged, your dentist will have to do filling. At times , a root canal also may be necessary in delay cases.
Dental Implants
Digital X Rays
Dental X-rays emit low amounts of radiation and precaution is taken to protect patients from exposure of these radiations. Apart from this some other issues of Dental X-rays are the wait time for film development and environmental concerns. Digital radiography addresses some of these issues. This has advantage over conventional radiography as it reduces exposure time to approx 90%, reduces waiting time, high quality digital image that can be transferred to computer & above all its environment friendly.
Inlays and Onlays
Dental inlay or onlay is bigger than a filling and smaller than a crown. It's bonded or cemented into place & is similar to a filling, but it lies within the cusps on the chewing surface of the tooth. An onlay is larger than an inlay and it replaces one or more decayed cusps. They can be made of gold, composite resin (plastic) or ceramics & has approx age of 10 years or longer. There are two types of inlays and onlays, direct and indirect. Direct are made in the dental office & can be placed in one visit while indirect are made in a laboratory & normally two visits are required.

Different kinds of sedation are inhaled minimal sedation, oral sedation, IV moderate sedation & deep sedation and general anaesthesia.
Laser Cavity Preparation
Treatment of cavities has two stages- the first is the removal of the decayed part of the tooth and the elimination of the bacteria & the second is the reconstruction of the tooth with a filling material. In conventional treatment the mechanical drill was used to cut the decayed section and often required the use of local anaesthetic & the process is often time consuming, while the sound of the drill invoking anxiety and fear in many patients. Use of laser has overcome these deficiencies & offer painless procedure and in most cases requires no anaesthetic is required. It also reduces patient’s anxiety as it is soundless. The patient gets a quality & precise treatment.
